Mastering the Art of One-Bowl SunButter M&M Blondies

Creating these sensational SunButter M&M Blondies is surprisingly simple. By following these straightforward steps, you’ll achieve perfect results every time. Remember, the “one-bowl” method means efficiency without sacrificing flavor or quality.

1. Melt Butter and SunButter Until Smooth

Begin by combining your unsalted butter and natural SunButter in a large, microwave-safe mixing bowl. Pop it into the microwave for about 30 seconds, or until the butter is completely melted. Once melted, take a whisk and vigorously combine the butter and SunButter until the mixture is perfectly smooth and uniformly incorporated. This foundational step is crucial for achieving the blondies’ signature buttery and rich flavor profile, as well as ensuring a consistent texture throughout the batter.

2. Blend in Sugars, Eggs, and Vanilla Extract

To the butter and SunButter mixture, add the granulated white sugar and light brown sugar. The brown sugar not only adds a deeper, caramelized flavor but also contributes significantly to the blondies’ chewy texture. Next, crack in the large eggs and pour in the vanilla extract. Whisk these ingredients together thoroughly. Continue whisking until the mixture is well-combined, smooth, and slightly lightened in color. This ensures that the sugars dissolve properly and the eggs are fully incorporated, creating a stable and emulsified base for your blondies.

3. Sift and Combine Dry Ingredients

For the next step, take a sieve and place it over your mixing bowl. Add the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt into the sieve. Sifting these dry ingredients directly into your wet batter is a critical technique. It helps to aerate the flour, preventing lumps and ensuring a light, tender texture in your final blondies. After sifting, gently whisk the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until they are just combined. Be careful not to overmix at this stage, as over-developing the gluten can lead to tough blondies.

4. Fold in Your Favorite Mix-ins: M&M’s, Chocolate Chips, and Sprinkles

Now comes the fun part! Add your M&M’s, chocolate chips, and colorful sprinkles to the batter. Using a spatula, gently fold these delicious mix-ins into the batter until they are evenly distributed. The key here is to fold rather than stir vigorously, to maintain the light consistency of the batter and prevent overmixing. The combination of chocolate chips for melt-in-your-mouth goodness, M&M’s for a delightful crunch and color, and sprinkles for an extra festive touch makes these blondies truly special.

5. Bake to Golden Perfection

Once your batter is ready, pour it evenly into your prepared baking pan. Make sure the pan is lined with parchment paper and lightly sprayed for easy removal. Place the pan into your preheated oven and bake as directed. Blondies are notoriously easy to overbake, which can result in a dry, cakey texture. The secret to a perfectly chewy blondie is to bake it until the edges are golden brown and set, but the center still looks slightly soft or “just set.” It might even seem a little underdone, but it will continue to cook as it cools, resulting in that desirable tender and chewy consistency. Allow them to cool completely in the pan before slicing.

Essential Tips for Baking the Perfect Blondies Every Time

While this recipe is incredibly straightforward, a few expert tips can elevate your SunButter M&M Blondies from good to absolutely phenomenal:

  • The Critical Role of Flour Measurement: This is arguably the most important factor in achieving perfectly chewy and tender blondies. Too much flour will result in a dry, dense, and tough blondie, while too little will make them fall apart. The most accurate method is to *weigh* your flour using a kitchen scale (240g for 2 cups). Volumetric measurements (using measuring cups) can often lead to over-measuring by a significant amount – sometimes even doubling the required flour if it’s packed too tightly. If you don’t have a scale, use the “spoon and level” method: gently spoon the flour into your measuring cup until overflowing, then level it off with a straight edge without packing it down. Never scoop directly from the bag with your measuring cup.
  • Don’t Overmix the Batter: Once you add the flour, mix until just combined. Overmixing develops the gluten in the flour, leading to a tougher, less tender blondie. A few streaks of flour are acceptable; they’ll disappear during baking.
  • Avoid Overbaking: Blondies are best when they are slightly underbaked in the center. They should be set around the edges but still look a little soft in the middle when you pull them from the oven. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with moist crumbs, not wet batter, but also not completely clean. The residual heat of the pan will continue to cook them as they cool, achieving that perfect chewy texture.
  • Cool Completely for Best Results: It’s tempting to dive in as soon as they come out of the oven, but for clean cuts and optimal texture, allow your blondies to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. This allows them to set properly and enhances their chewiness.
  • Room Temperature Ingredients: Ensure your butter and eggs are at room temperature. This allows them to emulsify better with the sugars and other ingredients, creating a smoother, more uniform batter and a superior final texture.

Serving Suggestions and Customization for Any Taste

These SunButter M&M Blondies are fantastic on their own, but they also serve as a versatile base for various delicious customizations and serving ideas:

  • Personalize Your Mix-ins: While M&M’s and chocolate chips are classic, feel free to experiment! If allergies aren’t a concern, chopped pecans or walnuts could add another layer of crunch. White chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, or even chopped pretzels can also be fantastic additions. Consider adding a pinch of sea salt on top before baking to enhance the sweet and savory notes.
  • Glaze or Frosting Options: For an extra touch of indulgence, drizzle cooled blondies with a simple vanilla glaze, a chocolate ganache, or even a SunButter drizzle. A light dusting of powdered sugar also adds an elegant finish.
  • Serve Warm with Ice Cream: A warm blondie square paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a dollop of whipped cream makes for an incredibly comforting dessert. The contrasting temperatures and textures are simply divine.
  • Holiday Theming: Beyond Valentine’s Day, easily adapt these blondies for other holidays. Use red, white, and blue M&M’s for patriotic celebrations, orange and black for Halloween, or festive red and green for Christmas. The sprinkles can also be swapped to match any theme.

Making it Special: Valentine’s Day Treat and Beyond

These SunButter M&M Blondies are inherently festive, especially with their colorful M&Ms and sprinkles. To specifically tailor them for Valentine’s Day, as shown in the images, I used heart-shaped cookie cutters to create adorable individual portions. This simple step instantly transforms them into a charming and thoughtful treat for your loved ones.

Feel free to use any size or shape of cookie cutter you have on hand – larger hearts for generous servings, or smaller ones for bite-sized delights. You could even use multiple sizes to create a dynamic platter. Alternatively, for a more classic and equally delicious approach, simply cut these vibrant M&M blondies into traditional squares. This recipe generously yields between 20 and 24 squares, making it perfect for sharing with a crowd or stocking up your treat jar.
